Mexican Drug Lord Now Pining For The Fjords |
2010-05-31 |
Mexican drug lord Pedro Roberto Velazquez Amador, known to many simply as "La Pina" has been killed in a shootout with federal forces in Mexico. A military convoy had been patrolling the San Pedro area in Monterrey when a gun battle broke out on Wednesday. Velazquez was the alleged leader of the Beltran Leyva drug trafficking organization. According the state-run Notimex news agency, a local newspaper shows the body of a man believed to be in his 30s, believed to be Velazquez, lying in a puddle of water with a firearm in his hand. While Velazquez was the alleged leader of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, recent reports say the fractured cartel has since splintered into warring groups. Mexican-American drug trafficker Edgar Valdez, known by his moniker "La Barbie" for his light complexion and blue eyes, is now claiming leadership over the cartel. The military reports seizing three small arms, 30 rounds of ammunition, a laptop and two vehicles during the shootout. In December, the co-founder of the Beltran Leyva cartel Arturo Beltran Leyva, was killed during a 90-minute shootout with the Mexican navy. The Mayor of Cancun, Greg Sanchez, has been detained by federal police Tuesday at the airport on suspicions of money laundering and allegedly helping protect the Beltran Leyva and Los Zetas cartel. |
