US Census manipulates job numbers
2010-05-31
[Iran Press TV Latest] The US Census Bureau has been manipulating the Labor Department's job growth numbers by 'faking' the jobs it creates, a report says.

Two workers hired by Census 2010 have come out with claims that the bureau has been fudging the job growth numbers to show positive growth, The New York Post reported.

The new revelations come after a worker, out of many such workers, brought the story to light. Naomi Cohn, told the daily last week that she was hired and fired a number of times by Census.

She claimed that Census played statistical tricks in reporting the creation of a new job to the Labor Department.

"A few months ago I was trained for three days and offered five hours of work counting the homeless. Now, I am knocking (on) doors trying to find the people that have not returned their Census forms. I worked the 2000 Census. It was a far more organized venture," the daily quoted another such worker from Manhattan.

According to the report, for the past two months, the hiring by Census has made up a good portion of the new jobs.

The report also claimed the Labor Department has redefined the employment description, saying if a person is hired to work at least one hour a month, he is employed.

#3  While counting heads, how many are US citizens?
Considering that these numbers give more representaion to their areas, I'd like to think they are representing citizens and not illegals.

I live in the mountains, and fairly remote in many ways. This being said, I had a census bag put on my door knob twice before I had even received my letter in the mail to fill out. Hiring census workers to follow up with folks that don't turn in their census info is one thing, paying folks to wander around taking hours to be able to only visit a few homes isn't cost efficient in my view. I'd like to think they were required to have some basic skills. It makes me wonder how accurate these numbers are when such incompetent people collected this information.

#2  Are there any numbers that are not manipulated by Washington? Any numbers you can trust? Such manipulation is just propaganda aimed at the American people.

#1  Lies, damned lies

and statistics

it is standard in Australia in every Government department to hide and twist and lie through statistics all the time.

Or just refuse to divulge the information - like mining royalties. They won't tell us how much they get for a specific project. They sell a billion dollars of the public's uranium to a mining company and won't tell us what they paid for it.

it's the same all over the world. US is the best of a bad lot though i'd say. More freedom of speech in your country to protect whistleblowers and the freedom of the press.
