Bomb blast kills one Turkish soldier
2010-06-16
A bomb explosion has killed at least one Turkish soldier and wounded three others in southeastern parts of the country close to the Iraqi frontier.

According to a Turkish security official, the blast took place close to a unit of border guards near Uludere town in Sirnak province on Tuesday.

The improvised bomb was triggered by one of the soldiers, said the official who was speaking on condition of anonymity, AFP reported.

Officials have blamed militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) for the Tuesday incident.

The Turkish government says about 2,000 PKK militants are hiding in Iraq's mountainous north, from where they launch attacks on the Turkish territory.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by much of the international community, including Turkey, Iran, the United States and European Union member states.

More than 40,000 people have lost their lives since the militant group launched its armed campaign against Ankara in 1984, as part of a quest to establish an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey.
