Twelve Suspected Militants Released

Works on the cases of another 25 suspected individuals are in progress, a member in a commission set to review the cases of suspected insurgents said.

However the fact that the commission for the review of suspected militants' cases is formed recently, a member in the commission informed that 12 prisoners who were detained in a foreign troops' prison in Kabul, the Afghan Capital, were released.

"If the prisoner has a cureless illness, or is too old, the commission has the right to make a suggestion to the president for his release," said Deputy Attorney General, Fazel Ahmad Faqir Yar.

The remarks come as earlier the UN special envoy to Afghanistan underscored that the review of the prisoners' cases require transparency.

"Of course this needs to be done with open criteria, so that if and when this takes place and we hope it would be taking place soon," said the top UN special representative to Afghanistan, Stefan de Mistura.

"The criteria applied will also be utilized for those detained without legal bases, who are not necessarily politically connected," he said.

Members in the commission for the review of prisoners' cases of suspected insurgents include representatives from Afghan Justice Ministry, High Court, Attorney General Department, and President's Office.
