Anorher woman in Iran to executed by stoning
2010-07-02
Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani, a mother of two, is waiting to die in Iran by a method of execution described by her lawyer as "barbaric" -- stoning. She will be buried up to her chest, deeper than a man would be, and the stones that will be hurled at her will be large enough to cause pain but not so large as to kill her immediately, according to an Amnesty International report that cited the Iranian penal code.

The 42-year-old woman from the northern city of Tabriz was convicted of adultery in 2006, and her execution is imminent, said prominent human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei.

Ashtiani was forced to confess after being subjected to 99 lashes, Mostafaei said Thursday in a telephone interview from Tehran.

She later retracted that confession and has denied wrongdoing. Her conviction was based not on evidence but on the determination of three out of five judges, Mostafaei said. She has asked forgiveness from the court but the judges refused to grant clemency.

Iran's supreme court upheld the conviction in 2007.

Mostafaei believes a language barrier prevented his client from fully comprehending court proceedings. Ashtiani is of Azerbaijani descent and speaks Turkish, not Farsi.
apparently there were no witnesses who saw the 'crime' but three learned imans think she was guilty

#6  Besides oil, the other factor I should have mentioned is transnational progressivism, which may be the death of us yet.

#5   Neither had/have what it takes to drag the Cretins into the 18th century. I don't think anyone has that ability. You can lead a horse to water, etc. A strategy of containment would have been the best the rest of the world could have hoped for, except for the unfortunate dependence of much of the world on cheap oil from Muslim countries.

#4  I do believe there are rational muslims. But I think they are a minority, and they exist mainly in the West. These people are criminally insane, and we are responsible because of GW and BO. Neither had/have what it takes to drag the Cretins into the 18th century.

#3  And while radical Islam marches on, National Counter-Terrorism Center-NCTC Chief Leiter told a panel that his biggest concern was trying to maintain a balance between the civil rights of the American public and the NCTCÂ’s effective intelligence-gathering, saying that remains a “significant” challenge. “I think what keeps me up at night Â… is how do we do that in a way that is not invasive of that other 300 million-plus [Americans]?” he said.
