Thai terrorist killed in shoot-out

Thailand's military says a suspected Muslim terrorist insurgent was killed and another turned himself in during a raid in the country's restive south. Lt. Col. Prathan Talabthong says the military, police and paramilitary troops surrounded a house in Pattani province's Mayo district. One terrorist suspected insurgent immediately surrendered. Four hours later, another man opened fire at the security forces, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Afterward, authorities found his dead body. Prathan says he was wanted by the police.

Also Wednesday, police Col. Suwat Wongpaiboon said a village defence volunteer was shot dead in an terrorist insurgent attack in nearby Yala province.

A police officer was pronounced dead at hospital after being wounded in a shooting and bombing attack at a checkpoint in Narathiwat on Monday. Pol.Sen.Sgt-Maj. Cherdsak Singbutrda, 52, died of massive blood loss while army Pvt. Aek Nimnuan, 22 is in critical condition in an intensive care unit.The private was shot in the head. The two men were attacked at a checkpoint in the provincial seat Monday evening.

A special military unit attempted to seal off an area in Bacho district and exchanged gunfire with terrorists suspected insurgents. Initially, however, there were no reports of injuries.
