'Sanctions hasten Iran's progress'
2010-09-07
[Iran Press] Vice Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Shahabeddin Sadr says sanctions and international pressure provide Iran with more opportunities for progress.

"The repeated adoption of resolutions will not weaken the Iranian nation's resolve in defending the country and protecting its dignity in the world," Sadr told a conference in Iran's northern Mazandaran Province on Monday.

"When it comes to Islam and the [Islamic] Revolution, the Iranian nation will rise [in their defense]," ISNA quoted Sadr as saying.

Sadr expounded on the achievements made by Iran during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war.

"During the imposed war, the enemy tried to halt the [Islamic] Revolution, but because of the resolve, willpower and faith and of the Muslin nation of Iran, the war became an opportunity for progress," he added.

#1  Sanctions have not worked in the past with the nutjobs. Just a prelude to war. It seems like there is a checklist or flow diagram we go through that goes something like this:

1. Stern diplomatic warnings. (Did they work? Nope.)
2. Sanctions? (Did they work? Nope.)
3. UN resolution? (Did it work? Nope. Maybe combined with #2.)
4. Even more stern warnings. (Did they work? Nope.)
5. Even tighter sanctions. (Did they work? Nope.)
6. Some precipitating event occurs such as an attack on us. Dithering in the higher echelons of power.
7. Limited war with difficult ROEs for the troops. (Does this win the hearts and minds? Nope.)

An alternative scenario might be use overwhelming force. Make war hurt. Make the enemy wish they had never f#cked with you in the first place. Exercise the option of rebuilding the country (or not).
