Security heightened in Sinai as Egypt arrests Hamas official | ||
2010-09-20 | ||
Egyptian security is on high alert in Sinai due to intel about planned Paleo rocket attacks from Egypt on Israel. Officials are investigating reports of plans to smuggle rockets from Gaza into Egypt and then fire them into Israel.
Israeli intelligence sources claim that Hamas has made a decision to increase terrorist attacks against Israel -- from both the Gaza Strip and from the West Bank -- to scuttle the peace talks. While Hamas is not always directly behind the attacks it allows proxies to launch rockets and mortars into Israel. Hamas has been restraining them from carrying out larger attacks recently. Meanwhile, a top Hamas security official, Muhammad Dababish (aka Abu Radwan), was arrested at Cairo airport for using phony travel documents. Hamas said that Dababish's arrest would lead to a deterioration in relations with Egypt and called for his release. "We will operate in a manner which will force the Egyptian leadership to release Abu Radwan," said a Hamas statement.
