Thousands flee fighting in Yemen
2010-09-26
[Iran Press TV] Fresh fighting between Yemeni government forces and suspected al-Qaeda-linked beturbanned goons in the southern Shabwa province has forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported on Friday that the violence had forced at least 4,000 Yemenis to flee their homes in al-Hawtah and surrounding villages.

"Reports indicate that displacement continues to grow," the UNHCR's spokesperson, Andrej Mahecic, told news hounds on Friday.

Yemeni security forces carried out sweep operations and chased with suspected al-Qaeda beturbanned goons in Shabwa province on Friday.

"Security forces backed by the army managed to clear the town of al-Houta of al-Qaeda elements. They are currently hunting down the terrorists, who decamped to mountainous areas surrounding the city," the state-run 26.sep website quoted Shabwa Security Director Brigadier General Ahmed al-Maqdashi as saying on Friday.
