Tenth Mexican mayor gunned down
2010-09-26
[Iran Press TV] Armed assassins have killed Mexican Mayor Prisciliano Rodriguez Salinas of the town Doctor Gonzalez near the city of Monterrey -- in what is the tenth such slaying incident this year.

Salinas, 53, was attacked by gunnies alongside his personal aide on Thursday night at his ranch home near the industrial center of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon in northern Mexico, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The incident was the fourth such assassination of a mayor in Mexico within the past six weeks, and the tenth within the past year.

In a separate attack on Friday night, Ricardo Solis, who was to be sworn in as mayor of Gran Morelos in the northern state of Chihuahua in two weeks, was shot and critically injured.

Mexican drug cartels target officials who are involved in the counter-narcotics efforts to control drug markets and smuggling routes to the United States.

More than 28,000 people in Mexico have been killed in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched his 'war on drugs' campaign in late 2006.

President Calderon condemned the recent killing, saying, "The federal government reiterates its commitment to continuing to work for the safety of all citizens and to fighting criminal gangs relentlessly."
