#11  When I was looking at rifles, I read that the Ruger Mini-14 is stamped ".223" on its receiver because of the Mexican ban on weapons that can take a "military cartridge". Technically, the Mini-14 can take a 5.56x45mm military round, which is physically identical but has a more powerful charge, but if they put that on the receiver... no more Mexican market!

But I doubt there are many drug lords putting Mini-14s in his armory, when he can buy AKs for a hair more than cost from Cuba, Venezuela, etc.

#9  Mexicans tell me they can legally own a single shot shotgun or a .22 rifle. No handguns, no high power rifles.

I think you'd have to be committing a crime with a gun to run afoul of the Mexican authorities. They seem much less proactive than our wonderful federal authorities like the ATF. In fact, you have to be doing something pretty over the top to get their attention most of the time. In my experience. There are exceptions, I'm sure.

#8  Good point, badanov. I keep forgetting about the gyrations we have to go through, just because those bloody R1ghth4ven lawyers added Rantburg to the shakedown list.

#6  Welcome to Rantburg, juandos! badanov does a "More Mexican Mayhem" round-up almost every day, plus there are occasional information-laden perspective pieces on our op-ed page by Chris Covert. Check Rantburg's archives for the past few months. Fred Pruitt in conference with the Rantburg moderators concluded that the situation in Mexico is a serious consideration for those following the War on Terror, given the strong working relationships between the drug gangs and Hamas, Hizb'allah, Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and Al Qaeda.... not to mention that there is strong evidence of Revolutionary Guard and other terrorists having been smuggled across the U.S. for years by Mexican coyotes (discarded uniforms, Arabic and Farsi speakers captured by our border guards, that kind of thing).

#4  There are six daily newspapers in Juarez that I know of, and nearly every one of them redact the names of the victims as a means of enhancing newsstand sales. Occasionally the names will get published, and sometimes I will redact the names myself if it is partial, or if the name doesn't appear to be fully confirmed in the translation.

Newspapers in other areas of northern Mexico do not redact to the extent Juarez papers do, prolly because of the intense competition for newsstand sales.

#3  Funny how the Mexican press can give you the make and model of vehicles, but can't seem to find people's names.

#2  The Mexican Government maintains a list of weapons the average citizen is not allowed to have, mostly anything the military and state police and higher use.

As it is, the Mexican Constitution allows a head of household to keep a gun in his home for personal defense purposes.

A grandma in Juarez last month emptied a revolver into a pair of criminals who attempted to abduct her husband, killing one and wounding the other.

No charges were filed against her.

#1   An alert neighbor outside shot the burglar

Aren't guns pretty much illegal in Mexico (like in Chicago and Washington District of Crime?) This neighbor could be in a lot of trouble.
