Emanuel out, Rouse in as Obama's chief of staff
2010-10-02
[Al Arabiya] President Barack B.O. Obama on Friday freed his hard-charging, energetic and fierce manager of his White House,
By golly he's right! It is taking a long time to free the slaves!
chief of staff Rahm Emanuel to run for mayor of Chicago, replacing the White House gatekeeper with Pete Rouse, as quiet and low-key as his predecessor was boisterous.

The ceremonial changing of the guard marked a clear loss for Obama, who relied heavily on Emanuel's intensity, discipline and congressional relationships to keep the White House focused and aggressive.

"We could not have accomplished what we've accomplished without Rahm's leadership," Obama said. Emanuel is departing after nearly two grueling, rough-and-tumble years in Washington, where the political atmosphere has become increasingly and bitterly partisan.

Other top aides to Obama have announced their departures in recent weeks, as the Obama presidency reaches its midpoint. Those kinds of personnel moves are not unusual two years into a presidential term.

Now, however, the changes occur with Obama's Democratic Party facing serious challenges in November congressional elections. Widespread losses by the party -- broadly expected -- in the House of Representatives and Senate could signal a much wider White House shake-up.

The announcement that Emanuel was leaving was such a poorly kept secret that Obama joked it was "the least suspenseful announcement of all time," but it represented an important moment of transition for the presidency.

The mood at the White House reflected that this was no ordinary staff change. Cabinet members and senior staff members packed the ornate East Room, a setting often reserved for visits of heads of state, for the official word that Emanuel, the hard-charging leader of the staff, was on his way out.

Rouse, named interim chief of staff, is a calm, trusted senior adviser to Obama who has spent much of his career as a chief of staff in the Senate. Unlike Emanuel, he rarely talks to the press.

"There is a saying around the White House: `Let's let Pete fix it,"' Obama said.

#6  I don't understand what reason the liberals have to be dissatisfied with Emanuel; everything that they've accomplished has been according to _his_ plan. Get enough liberals into the executive branch pretending to be moderates and independents, and reshape as much of the landscape as possible while in the process of destroying the careers of those individuals, in the hopes of changing the long-term landscape of the US into a bankrupt little socialist/feudalist banana republic. Because, long term, it'll be harder for the conservatives to maintain power when people have to choose between socialist health care and no health care, and noone has any _independence_ to speak of.

There's method to his madness.

He's now retreating to one of the feudalist strongholds to ride out the conservative reaction in the hopes that they won't be able to fix things, and given that they've burned through about three or four trillion dollars worth of seed corn in the past two years, he may be right.

#5  One too many WTF's in White House staff meetings I suspect. Time for a more genteel Chief of Staff who plays well with others.

#4  "We could not have accomplished what we've accomplished without Rahm's leadership," Obama said.

"Damned with faint praise" comes instantly to mind.

#1  Rahm Emanuel 'given dead carp' as farewell gift
Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama's White House Chief of Staff, was given a dead Asian carp as a farewell gift from colleagues before the former presidential aide resigned in order to run for mayor in his home town Chicago.
