[Pak Daily Times] A British aid worker, Linda Norgrove held hostage in Afghanistan since 26 September, was killed by her captors after a failed rescue bid, the British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Saturday.

DAI President and CEO James Boomgard expressed grief over Linda's death. Linda and three Afghan colleagues were kidnapped in eastern Kunar province

on September. 26 after being ambushed. Police fought a gunbattle with the kidnappers near the attack site before the assailants decamped. Linda's co-workers were released shortly afterward. Hague said that his allies received information about where Linda was being held so they decided to take action to rescue her. Both British and NATO officials refused to provide more specific information.

The top commander of US Gen David Petraeus said that Afghan and coalition security forces did everything in their power to rescue Linda and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He added Linda was a courageous person with a passion to improve the lives of Afghan people, and sadly she lost her life in their service.

On the other side, Spokesman for Italy's Defense Ministry Gen Massimo Fogari said that four Italian soldiers were killed and another was maimed seriously in the kaboom on Saturday. He added the bomb exploded as a 70-vehicle convoy passed by cut-throats in western Farah province. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi expressed his grief over the tragic ambush and said that he was grateful to all Italian soldiers who, in various missions around the world, allow their country to keep its international commitments in support of peace and against any form of terrorism. The deaths brought the number of NATO forces killed to 24, this month.

I heard NPR's version of this sad story yesterday. The fact that she was killed by her kidnappers was not mentioned at all.
