CID arrests four 'target killers'
2010-10-24
[Pak Daily Times] Four suspects were jugged for their involvement in assassinations of police personnel and muscle affiliated with political parties in the Sindh coalition government, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed on Saturday.

The jugged men were identified as Bilal Zafar, Babar Mumtaz, and brothers Muhammad Hanif and Muhammad Asad; and this is the first arrest made public amid the fresh spate of assassinations.

CID (Operations) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fayyaz Khan said the detainees were involved in assassinations in Bloody Karachi during the past few years.

"We believe they are involved in other crimes as well, as the police had been searching for them for quite sometime," the SSP added.

CID officials said the jugged men were captured from a house on Services Road near the Aqsa mosque in Liaquatabad's Burhani Colony by a CID team, which was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Chaudhry Safdar and supervised by SSP Khan.

A Kalashnikov, a rifle, a pistol, a knife, 65 rounds of bullets and two motorcycles were also recovered from their possession at the time of the arrest, the officials added.

The detainees had admitted that they were involved in murders and robberies, while Zafar also revealed that he was a former policeman.

The two motorcycles, used in incidents of killings, were snatched from Clifton and Zaman Town.

The detainees admitted to killing Mahir Khan in front of his house in Allah Walla Town, while Zafar also confessed to killing political activist Kashif Abdul Rasheed near the Ghausia mosque in Liaquatabad.

Zafar, Asad and Hanif Babar alias Farrukh had killed Liaquatabad cop shoppe's muharrar assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Javed in the Garden area because the ASI had come to know of his crimes.

Zafar, Asad and Babar (Farrukh) had also killed Mansoor Asim in the Liaquatabad police precincts, while the detained men and their gang had killed political activist Kaleem Ahmed in the same police jurisdiction as well, using a Kalashnikov they had snatched from a policeman.

Zafar was the leader of a gang, which is not only involved in assassinations, but robberies, kidnappings for ransom and extortions as well.

SSP Khan said the CID was determined to put an end to assassinations in the city and would leave no stone unturned to arrest the criminals.
