Four unidentified state police agents were shot and wounded in a confrontation in Torreon, Coahuila, that turned out to be a case of friendly fire, say Mexican news accounts.
At around 1100 hrs Tuesday morning near the corner of calle Nicaragua and calzada Emiliano Carranza, two Coahuila state police agents were effecting the arrest of an unidentified carjacking suspect, when armed suspects aboard a GMC pickup truck fired on the agents, who then returned fire.
The ensuing firefight hit several homes and a church in the area and sparked a mobilization of security forces in the area.
Two police agents were hit by gunfire, but so were two armed suspects aboard the pickup truck.
Field interviews of the wounded revealed that the two armed suspects were undercover police agents tasked to escort Joseph Ganem, a Torreon city councilor. The undercover agents fired on the state police agents because of the presence of firearms just a few meters from the business of their escort.
All four are expected to survive their wounds.
