Armed suspects aboard two vehicles launched two grenades at a Gomez Palacio prison Monday morning, according to Mexican news reports.
The attack took place at 1120 hrs at the Centro de Readaptacion Social Number 2 (CERESO) where armed suspects aboard a Nissan Sentra and Volkswagen Bora launched two 40mm grenades.
The grenades failed to detonate.
Reports say guards at the prison fired several shots at the suspects as the suspects fled towards El Vergel. A chase by municipal police ended when one of the police vehicles crashed in a rollover. Three officers were injured in the crash.
The Gomez Palacio CERESO Number Two was the same facility where several prison staff were caught last summer using prisoners to carry out assassinations on Los Zetas facilities in nearby Torreon, Coahuila.
Reports also said a grenade attack was launched last Thursday at 0830 hrs also in Gomez Palacio at a facility of the Secretaria de Proteccion y Vialidad (SPV) on bulevar José Rebollo Acosta where armed suspects aboard two late model trucks threw three grenades at the building, two of which detonated. The suspects then fled towards bulevar Miguel Aleman.
