Bea Arthur was a Marine |

I don't know why she denied it, but here's the proof. |

#6 I included the fact she was a Marine in the Obit article I wrote up when she passed. I thought everyone knew this about her So much to remember, Knottie, so little brain space -- in my case, at least. If you wait six months, I'll probably be astounded again. I can never remember jokes, either, which hopefully isn't why I think Mr. Wife a marvelously witty man... |

#3 I remember the back-biting against one of my HS teachers, who - rumor had it - had been in the WACs. And she was a gym teacher and kinda butch-looking, which only doubled the nasty assumptions. I'm sorry Ms Arthur felt that she had to disappear her service that way. But considering the context that military service for women was regarded in the 50's and 60's - and it must have been even worse for someone in the acting profession - I don't altogether blame her. Now if she had said the heck with it and been open about her service, she would have had quite a fan base among Marines past and present. My daughter - who did two tours as a Marine - says this is the reason that the Marines adore Drew Carey. She could have had a chunk of that fan-base! |

#2 She worked in a field that increasingly came to frown on the military and everything connected with it, except cool film explosions. |
