Mortar attacks kill nine in Pakistan
2010-12-18
[Iran Press TV] Mortar attacks have left at least nine people dead in northwest Pakistain as mourning processions commemorate the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam Hossein (PTUI!).

Four mortars, fired from a neighboring district, slammed into two houses in the town of Hangu.

Police say six of the dead are Shia and three are Sunni Mohammedans, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Shia Mohammedans form a majority of the population of the region and are a constant target for Islamic myrmidon pro-Talibs in the volatile region.

The attack happened as Mohammedans in Pakistain mark the Ashura.

Meanwhile police in Southern Pakistain say they opened fire on a man planning to detonate a bomb amid a Shia mourning procession. Officials say the suspect detonated his bomb as he decamped and injured three coppers.

The developments come one day after a grenade attack killed a toddler and maimed several other people in the northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar on Thursday.

"One child, aged two years, has died and 26 others were maimed. There are 12 women and three children among the injured," said head of the city's Lady Reading Hospital Abdul Hamid Afridi.

Several incidents of violence against Shia Mohammedans have also been reported in other parts of the country.

Pak security officials say that they have seized arms, ammunition and explosives intended to be used in attacks against Shia mourning processions for Imam Hossein (PTUI!) in major cities.

Several Shia religious gatherings have been targeted in different parts of the country over the past few months.

Last year, bully boyz grabbed credit for a deadly attack that killed 43 people at an Ashura gathering in Bloody Karachi.

Since the 1980s, thousands of people have been killed in sectarian-related incidents in Pakistain.

Pakistain is also plagued with violence as it is struggling with non-UN-sanctioned US aerial strikes as well as attacks by bully boyz on NATO trucks carrying supplies to the US-led forces in war-ravaged Afghanistan.
