| Nigerian barracks blast kills 30 |

| Nearly 30 people died on Friday when a bomb went off outside army barracks during New Year celebrations in the Nigerian capital Abuja. The precise number of those killed has not yet been confirmed by military authorities though. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion which many blame on Islamic radicals. |
