Counternarcotics operations continued in Michoacan Tuesday and Wednesday in northern Michoacan, despite a recent informal announcement that the La Familia Michoacan drug cartel was out of the drug and crime business.
  • A Mexican Army unit encountered armed suspects near Apatzingän and killed one after attempting to stop a convoy of SUVs Tuesday. Reports say a two vehicle convoy was signalled to stop by an army detachment on patrol on the Buenavista Tomatlan and Apatzingan highway. The passengers dismounted and commenced firing on the army unit. Army return fire killed one suspect and forced the rest to flee into the mountains. Seized were two GM pickup trucks, five rifles including AR-15 and AK-47 assault rifles, two 9mm and one .45 caliber pistols, and 50 magazines, two grenades, 1,200 rounds of ammunition and radio equipment.

  • A Mexican Army unit seized a large amount of contraband at a warehouse in Sahuayo. When the security forces arrived at the location two armed individuals presumably fled into cover. Inside the building soldiers found:

    • Two sawed off shotguns.

    • Two AK-47 assault rifles.

    • 285 rounds of ammunition.

    • 20 tactical vests with logos of various Mexican security agencies.

    • 77,000 cigarettes.

    • 78,000 cell phone chips.

    • 2,000 sacks of corn starch.

    • 101 can of chemicals.

    • Three stolen trailers.

  • Two individuals allegedly linked to La Familia Michoacana were arrested in Guatemala City, Guatemala early Thursday on charges of trafficking in methamphetamine. Leonel Estrada Edgar Morales, 55, and his nephew Victor Emilio Estrada, 27, are being held in Guatemala until the United States can prove to the Guatemalan court sufficient evidence exists to extradite the two suspects to the United States for trial on drug trafficking charges. The extradition treaty between the US and Guatemala give the US 40 days to make its case for extradition.
