7 Private Security Firms Linked to Officials Disbanded
2011-02-01
[Tolo News] Seven private security companies linked to some Afghan high-ranking officials were dissolved, a top official in Ministry of Interior Affairs said Monday. Officials said soon the disarmament process of the companies will begin.

Investigations have begun about 17 other private security firms after they were accused of being involved in some irregularities. The irregularities and allegations included tax evasion, over-employment and keeping more vehicles than allowed by the contracts.

Private security firms linked to top government officials and people close to President Karzai have caused widespread concerns among the officials that it would hamper the disbandment process of the companies.

"Seven private security firms have been disbanded after being identified as being linked to high-profile government officials," said Chief of Counter-Terrorism Department of Afghan Interior Ministry.

The seven newly-disbanded companies are part of the entire 52 licensed private companies.

Earlier as part of the disbandment process of private security firms, 57 illegal companies were banned and dissolved.

Nearly 3,000 heavy and small arms have been seized from the companies, which were believed to be causing violence and insecurity in the country.
