Militants kill four policemen in Balochistan
2011-02-03
[Dawn] Gunmen rubbed out four coppers and kidnapped six other people, including a top administrator, in Balochistan, officials said Wednesday.

The incidents took place overnight in the Aab-i-Gum area of the mountainous Bolan region, 60 kilometres south of Quetta, the capital of oil- and gas-rich province.

"Gunmen rubbed out four coppers on the main highway in Aab-i-Gum while they were heading towards Quetta," local senior police official Junaid Ahmad said.

"Earlier, we had reports of five police being killed but one of the coppers, who disappeared into the nearby mountains reported to his bosses on Wednesday morning."

He said there had been no claim of responsibility.

Balochistan's home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said gunnies also kidnapped the deputy head of administration in Jhal Magsi town, Shaukat Murghazani, another two civilians and three coppers on the same highway late Tuesday.

"The gunnies allowed family members of Murghazani also travelling with him to go," Durrani said.

Impoverished Balochistan is wracked by an insurgency waged by ethnic Baloch tribes seeking greater autonomy from the federal government and a greater share of profits from the region's natural resources.

Last October, Amnesia Amnesty International called on Pakistain to investigate the alleged torture and killing of more than 40 Baloch politicians and activists against a backdrop of Pak military activities in the province.

The region has also been hit by attacks blamed on Talibs, although sabotage of gas pipelines is a trademark of nationalist beturbanned goons.
