Five gunned down in shooting spree in southern Thailand
2011-02-03
Terrorists Suspected insurgents opened fire on a Buddhist community in Pattani province early Thursday, killing five people and injuring four others. Among the dead is Pongsak Phetch, an education supervisor in the Pattani Educational Service Area Office.

Five attackers on a pickup truck drove into Khok Krabue village. Armed with machine guns and handguns, they shot at passers-by and villagers in their homes.

The police failed to locate the suspicious vehicle after the assault occurred amid a number of witnesses during a previously scheduled rotation of security volunteers and soldiers. This left no security personnel guarding the area when the assailants attacked and left.

In another incident, a rubber tapper, Abduloh Kabo, 49, had his head clubbed and his neck slashed while he drove his motorcycle home from a rubber plantation in Pattani province at 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

This occured after presumed terrorists insurgents burned tires and telephone booths at seven spots in Pattani on Wednesday night.
