Ex-policeman, monk killed in southern Thailand |

A spate of terrorist attacks in southern Thailand on Sunday left a retired policeman and a monk dead and many people injured. In Pattani province, masked men on three motorcycles opened fire at people shopping and working out near a local road in the morning. Police Sgt Sanan Sangkasunya, 64, died from his injuries at the hospital while the other four victims, including Muhammad Isris Pathan, 18, were seriously wounded. Mr Muhammad's father Yula said the In Pattani province, two men shot a man and his mother while they were travelling on their motorcycle. Nattakorn Jantip, 23, was instantly killed but his mother was not hit. She sustained minor injuries from falling off of the bike. Also in Pattani, a 32-year-old soldier was shot and seriously injured while on patrol. At almost the same time, unknown men launched an M79 grenade at a checkpoint on the Pattani-Yala Road then opened fire. After a fierce three minute exchange, the attackers withdrew. No one was hurt. |
