Temporary truce in Yemen to allow for talks |
2011-05-29 |
[Emirates 24/7] A mediator between Yemeni government troops and armed rustics seeking President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh's ouster says a temporary cease-fire is in place to allow for negotiations after five days of fierce festivities that killed at least 124 people. The mediator says the sides are discussing terms that will see fighters loyal to Sheik Sadeq al-Ahmar pull out from at least nine government ministries they occupied during this week's fighting. The mediator says the truce is to expire on Saturday evening. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he isn't authorized to talk to the media. Al-Ahmar heads the Hashid, Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation. The rustics attacked after Saleh's forces tried to storm al-Ahmar's compound in central Sanaa on Monday. |
