Taiwanese captain killed in crossfire between US Navy and Somali pirates
2011-05-29
The skipper of a Taiwanese fishing vessel hijacked by Somalian pirates over a year ago was accidently killed recently during a conflict between a U.S. warship and his captors.

Wu Lai-yu, captain of the Zechuntsai No. 68, died on May 21 during an exchange of fire between the fishing boat, used by the pirates as a mother ship, and the USS Stephen W. Groves in the Indian Ocean. Three pirates were also killed in the battle.

Wu's body is reported to have sank along with the fishing ship. Meanwhile, U.S. authorities have informed Taiwan that crew members aboard their warship had held a funeral for Wu.

The Zechuntsai was hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia in late March 2010. After over a year of negotiations, Wu's family finally struck a ransom deal late last month.
