Updated: Pentagon area roads closed, man arrested due to car w/ suspicious package
2011-06-17
Most major roads in northern VA were closed. Commute was a total mess today - this incident plus trees & power down on a backup route

Update: 10:00 CST
Authorities identify suspect in Friday morning's suspicious package incident outside the Pentagon as Yonathan Melaku, a lance corporal in the Marine Corps Reserve. Officials say Melaku, a Muslim, carried a backpack he claimed contained explosive materials. Tests showed, however, that the substance was "inert."

#10  Well, Yonathan is going to spend several interesting months being interviewed by half the federal LEOs in the eastern US. FBI, DHS, CID, USCIA, CIA, etc. ad nauseum, with more cavity searches than a handsome gay millionaire could buy on Castro Street.

#9  No Weiner had a small gun and an entirely too well known package.

#8  Whoever he is, he doesn't need to be a Marine.

#7  Wonder if this is the same guy who was taking pot shots at recruiting stations and the like in the CD area?

#4  This was the second incident near the Pentagon this week. Previous guy had a gun and a 'suspicious package' too.

#3  American citizen of Ethiopian descent.

Sources told ABC News the man's backpack contained what officials suspect is ammonium nitrate and spent 9mm shells as well as written material that contained statements including: "al qaeda taliban rules."

One source told ABC News that they need final confirmation on whether it is ammonium nitrate and it's not clear whether this was a workable device.

Apparently, this man is in the habit of acting suspiciously.

Previously, the man was suspected of planting suspicious devices just outside Washington, D.C., in the area of Arlington, Va., at the national cemetery, the Pentagon and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Test runs, then the real thing?
