Righthaven fined $5,000 for misleading NevadaÂ’s federal court |
2011-07-14 |
A few highlights: A judge today fined newspaper copyright lawsuit filer Righthaven LLC of Las Vegas $5,000 for misleading Nevada’s federal court about its lawsuits. Besides the $5,000 sanction, Hunt ordered Righthaven to disclose its original lawsuit contract with Stephens Media in active lawsuits over Review-Journal material. He also ordered that a transcript of today’s hearing, in which he made several negative comments about Righthaven’s conduct, be posted on Righthaven court dockets. As word spreads among attorneys of the sanction, it may increase the chance that defendants that settled with Righthaven may reopen their cases – or separately sue Righthaven – on the theory settlements were made based on facts misrepresented by Righthaven. |

#2 Unfortunately Righthaven is more or less a front organization designed to soak up a lot of the expenses while the profits go elsewhere. |

#1 $5k isn't peanuts unless it is a multiplier, which hopefully, it is. The real goodness is when the lawyers are referred to the bar for barristry, etc. |
