For a map of Michoacan, click here A total of eight armed suspects were killed in an early morning firefight with a unit of the Mexican Army in Michoacan Tuesday, according to Mexican news accounts. A detachment of the Mexican 21st Military Zone was on a road patrol near the village of Tecario in Tacambaro municipality at around 0500 hrs when it encountered armed suspects travelling aboard several pickup trucks. Armed suspects fired on the soldiers, who hen returned fire. The ensuing gun battle lasted several minutes and spread as suspects attempted to scatter to avoid capture. At least one suspects escaped the encounter. At least one report said one Mexican soldier was wounded in the firefight. Michoacan was recently reinforced with 1,800 Mexican Federal agents along with additional army and Mexican Marines troops in an effort to deal with the new Caballeros Templarios drug cartel, an offshoot of the La Familia Michoacana drug cartel. La Familia has been destroyed by constant attacks by Mexican security forces since the first of the year and by several high profile arrests of leaders. |
