'Climate change' causes dramatic reduction in malaria
2011-08-29
Don't expect this to be splashed over the front pages, but malaria, the second biggest killer of children worldwide, is in dramatic decline across much of East Africa, and it appears climatic changes are the cause.

Of course, everything caused by climate change has to bad. So there are weasily speculations as to why climate change isn't the cause at the link (BBC).

Saving the lives of many thousands of children, and improving the lives of many thousands more, should be a cause for celebration.

But what are the lives of poor black Africans worth when compared to salving white middle class guilt at their affluent wasteful lifestyles.

#10  Perhaps they are quietly using DDT

The bed nets are soaked in DDT. DDT is also used on entrance ways and windows. Very effective and doesn't get into the water like wide area spraying.

#9  Mosquitos can fly when the temp is 14C or higher.

#8  Mosquitoes + other pesky flying insects, etc. don't like the cold air.

#7  From the link,

In 2004 they caught over 5,000 insects. In 2009 that had dropped to just 14.

More importantly, these collections took place in villages that weren't using bed nets.

The bed nets stop the spread of malaria. They shouldn't have much effect on mosquito populations.

Perhaps they are quietly using DDT.

#6  "Errata: One hundred million colored people dead due to the ban on DDT"

He doesn't care about that either, JFM. :-(

#4  GNot sure Greeans would consider this as a positive effect. When I told one of them about the one hundred colored people dead due to the ban on DDT he told me he didn't care.

#3  Far be it from me not to accuse the BBC of weaseldom, but while climate change is one possible factor, another is the massive amount of mosquito control work being done to get malaria under control. A big part of this involves DDT (oh noes!). Paging Rachel Carson to the white courtesy phone.

#2  Probably was methane from those systems, Glenmore. A stronger greenhouse gas than CO2, as it happens.

#1  One potential climate change cause is a reduction in rainfall (or at least in predictable rainfall) - which would reduce mosquitos, which would reduce malaria, but would also reduce crops and increase starvation. Climated change of that type has been occurring across north Africa for millenia - the north coast was a breadbasket of the Romans, but modern Libya certainly isn't. Must've been due to the CO2 emissions of the Roman chariot propulsion systems.
