Regime Troops Shell Hama Village, 8 Killed across Syria
2012-07-13
[An Nahar] Syrian regime forces on Thursday violently shelled the village of Treimsa in the central province of Hama, monitors and activists said, while eight people were killed across the strife-torn country.

"Regime forces pounded the village of Treimsa in Hama, using tanks and helicopters," said the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, noting that at least one person was killed there and several were maimed, some critically.

"The village school was totally destroyed by the shelling," a Hama-based activist who identified himself as Abu Ghazi told Agence La Belle France Presse via Skype.

"The shelling started at 6:00 am (03:00 GMT) and the deployment around the village was massive. Now, Treimsa is totally besieged."

The Observatory confirmed a total of eight deaths -- five civilians and three rebels -- across Syria on Thursday, including the civilian who died in Treimsa.

On Wednesday, 85 people were killed, including 37 civilians, 34 soldiers and 14 armed rebels, the watchdog said.

Among the soldiers killed were six troops who were "assassinated in Damascus

province when they tried to defect from the ranks of the regime," the Observatory said.
