New Orleans hunkers down to meet Isaac
2012-08-28
Hundreds of thousands of people on Monday prepared themselves, their families and businesses to receive what by Tuesday will be Hurricane Isaac and the possibility of its 100-mph winds in the safety of their bunkered homes and neighborhoods on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center said it expects Isaac to grow from a tropical storm to hurricane status Monday night, and the storm is expected to pass the mouth of the Mississippi River on Tuesday night, flinging 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some locations getting 20 inches. The storm is set to cross the New Orleans area Wednesday morning. Eastern edges of the area will see 8 to 12 feet of storm surge.

#3  It looks as if Isaac is going to top out at about 80 mph (per 5pm edt advisory from NHC).

and New Orl and Gulfport sustained winds are likely to remain below 50 mph or so.

Lots of rain, especially as the system moves north and then east.

#2  This (pdf) is the current state of the flood protection system for the New Orleans area, for which Champ will undoubtedly take credit if all goes well. I worry about people living outside the system, who have minimal protection if any. Then again, those people -- shrimpers, oil field workers, etc.-- are some of the toughest SOB's currently alive on the planet and aren't going to sit around waiting for FEMA to stop by.
