Education director, PPP man among nine shot dead

[Dawn] KARACHI: A top education officer, a worker of the Pakistain People's Party and a policeman were among nine persons killed and several others were maimed in gun attacks in the city on Tuesday.

Metropolitan Corporation was rubbed out in the KMC's education office in Hyderabad Colony on Jamshed Road, where three gunnies entered and shot him dead.

"The gunnies held the around 20 staff members at gunpoint, went into the office of education director Shamim Khan and fired three bullets at him," said DSP Qaiser Ali Shah.

The suspects fled without facing any resistance.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim suffered gunshot wounds in the chest and head causing his instant death, the police said.

The suspects used 9mm pistol. The police found several spent bullet casings at the scene of the crime. The suspects had come to the office on a cycle of violence.

The police said they were not sure about the motive for the killing.

Sindh Minister for Education Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq and the KMC administrator condemned the murder of the education officer.

PPP worker rubbed out

An activist of the Pakistain People's Party was bumped off in a North Nazimabad locality on Monday.

Police said the incident took place near Pahar Ganj within the remit of the Shahrah-e-Noor Jehan cop shoppe.

"Sajjad Hussain aka Balti was having tea at a restaurant when two gunnies riding a cycle of violence fired shots at him," said SP-North Nazimabad Latif Siddiqui.

"The victim suffered bullet wounds in the head which caused his instant death."

The police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

District central president of the PPP Syed Sohail Abdi said Syed Sajjad Hussain Kazmi had gone to the area to get his car repaired when he was attacked.

The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the head and chest, said Mr Abdi.

"Sajjad was the PPP's city information secretary and was head of the 'martyred gallery' of the party workers killed over the years. He collected details of slain party workers, and now he himself has met the same fate," said Mr Abdi.

Following the killing, tension gripped the Shahrah-e-Noor Jehan area where shops and markets were forced to close by protesters.

Funeral prayers for Sajjad Hussain were held at Imambargah Babul Ilm in North Nazimabad. Later he was buried in the Mohammad Shah graveyard in North Bloody Karachi.

A large number of people carrying the coffin of the victim staged a sit-in at the Five-Star Chowrangi.

Burnes Road killings

Two men were bumped off on Burnes Road in the night.

Police said the incident took place near the Government College for Women, where gunnies riding a cycle of violence targeted two men on another cycle of violence.

Police said the victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at the CHK.

They were identified as Kamal Shah, 36, and Alam Zeb, 33, residents of Haji Mureed Goth and C-1 Area in Liaquatabad, respectively.

A senior police officer of the area said two pistols were found in the possession of the victims.Police said one of the victims was a court bailiff.
The police were not sure about the motive for the killing.

Soldier Bazaar attack

A young man was bumped off and another was maimed in a gun attack in Soldier Bazaar No 2 on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the Soldier Bazaar cop shoppe, where gunnies riding a cycle of violence opened fire on a paan kiosk.

Police said as a result of the firing two men identified as Ali Abbas, 30, and Hasan were maimed.

They were taken to the CHK, where Ali died during treatment and Hasan was admitted for treatment.

"Two suspects carried out the shooting at a paan kiosk, killing a man and wounding another. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear," DSP Qaiser Ali Shah said.

Wounded lawyer dies

A lawyer who had been maimed in what police described as a sectarian attack on Jahangir Road last Friday died in a private hospital on Tuesday.

Mirza Waqar Hussain Naqvi, 50, a lawyer of the Sindh High Court, was targeted by gunnies on Jahangir Road within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters cop shoppe on Oct 12.

"The incident took place at 8.45am. Mr Naqvi was coming from home in Nazimabad when four gunnies riding two cycle of violences opened fire on his car (AQD-203) near Teen Hatti," DSP Qaiser Ali Shah said. "The driver accelerated the car to escape, but the victim suffered six gunshot wounds," he added.

The maimed man was taken to the Aga Khan Hospital, where he was operated upon.

He was also an office-bearer of the Pasban-e-Aza and brother-in-law of Allama Sajid Shabbir.

The lawyers' fraternity had condemned the attack.

Two bankers maimed

Two bankers were maimed in an attack on their car in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Tuesday evening.

Police said the attack took place at Mochi Mor within the remit of the Gulshan-e-Iqbal cop shoppe, where gunnies riding a cycle of violence opened fire on the car.

As a result of the firing, Amir Naqvi and Mohammad Abbas suffered multiple gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a private hospital, where they were admitted for treatment.

The police quoting hospital sources said the condition of Amir Naqvi was critical. Amir, who was at the wheel, bore the brunt of the attack.

Both men were colleagues and employees of a private bank. Amir was a resident of Ancholi and Abbas of Gulshan Block 10.

DIG-East Shahid Hayat said the attack appeared to be sectarian in nature.

Policeman killed

A policeman, who recently got married for a third time, was bumped off in North Nazimabad on Tuesday.

Police said the incident took place at the KDA Chowrangi, where Mohammad Shafee, 50, was riding his cycle of violence to work when assailants also on a cycle of violence opened fire on him and fled.

The victim was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was posted in the investigation wing of the North Nazimabad police, SP-North Nazimabad Latif Siddiqui said.

"The killing appears to be motivated by personal enmity. The victim had very recently contracted a third marriage," SP Siddiqui said.

Three young men found dead

The bodies of three unidentified young men were found in two different parts of the city on Tuesday.

Two of the men were found dead off Mauripur Road in the morning.

Police said the bodies were found in a narrow street on Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road close to Crown Cinema within the remit of the Kalri cop shoppe.

Both victims were in their mid-20s and the bodies bore torture marks and gunshot wounds in the head, police said.

The bodies were taken to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi for medico-legal formalities. Later they were taken to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Another unidentified body was found in Mohammad Colony, better known as Machhar Colony, within the remit of the Jackson cop shoppe in the morning.

Police said the body bore torture marks and a gunshot wound in the head.

Police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

Builder dies

A builder maimed in an attack on National Stadium Road late on Monday night died during treatment early on Tuesday morning in a private hospital.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the New Town cop shoppe, where assailants riding a cycle of violence opened fire on a jeep, wounding Haji Ahmed, 65. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he died later.

Police said the victim was a resident of PECHS Block-2 and the owner of the Subhanallah construction company.

The police said the killing could be related to some business matter.
