Yemen Troops Kill 12 'Qaida Militants' in Restive South
2013-02-03
[An Nahar] Yemen's armed forces killed 12 suspected al-Qaeda bully boyz in an assault on their mountain hideout in the country's restive south, an official in the region said on Saturday.

The military used artillery and aircraft to target the hideout near Shaqra, 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. capital of Zinjibar, in the operation late on Friday, the official said.

Among those killed was Belidi Tawfiq, the brother of one of al-Qaeda's leaders in Abyan province, the official added.

Luhishi Hussein, a leader of a paramilitary unit that supports the military against the jihadist network in southern Yemen, said the operation resulted in "more than 10 deaths in the ranks of al-Qaeda."

The bully boyz had been holed up in the area after being driven out of cities and towns in the region following a military offensive launched in June last year.
