Armed groups clash in Libya capital: Security source
2013-06-27
[Al Ahram] Fighting erupted in the Libyan capital on Wednesday after gunnies from the western city of Zintan tried to free five of their comrades seized by former rebels, a security source told AFP.

The festivities with small arms and heavy weapons broke out in the Abu Slim area near central Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, an AFP journalist and witnesses said.

#2  Don't feel bad. Six dead still doesn't rise to Chicago standards. Maybe they're better shots in Chicago.

#1  I had a ring side seat to that one. It was not in central Tripoli, it was further in the outskirts, I was in the Hadbah district and the fighting was further out than Hadbah.

Apparently two groups got into it. Early accounts say the group from Zintan oil field security guards complaining about not being paid. They were demonstrating at their employers offices in Tripoli when shots were fired. The Army shows up to separate the two groups, the NPS shows up to separate the two groups and then the NPS and the Army start shooting at each other.

It finally died down after dark. 6 Dead.

The Libyan Army has a rapid response team to squash any of these kinds of things and to disarm the combatants. The Security police (NPS) were not supposed to be there.

Obviously the Libyan government has to deal with all of these armed militias running around.

Apparently I am having to eat my words about how quiet it has been here...
