North Korea Mass Games mark 60th anniversary of Korean War
2013-07-24
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] North Korea launched a new run of its large-scale "Arirang" performance in Pyongyang on Monday to mark the 60th Anniversary of the end of hostilities during the Korean War.

Often referred to as the "Mass Games" outside Korea, up to 100,000 performers took part in the series of acrobatic, dance and pictorial displays at the capital's May Day Stadium.

Many performers are students and schoolchildren, while some are professional dancers and acrobats.

Famously, much of the audience seating in the stadium is taken up by performers who manipulate a series of coloured cards to create moving images in a similar way to pixels on a television screen.

North Korea calls the event a "mass gymnastic and artistic performance". North Korea's state news agency KCNA reported last month that this year's Arirang would "represent the undying feats Generalissimo Kim Il Sung performed in winning the war, as well as the feats Generalissimo Kim Jong Il performed in leading the Songun (military-first) revolution."
