#1  The stuff is volatile. The typical extremely low humidity in NM keeps dust particles airborne, especially if static electricity is also generated. I once grew habaneros in my back yard, made the mistake of taking a ripe one into the kitchen & cutting it in half. Everyone inside soon had eye irritation & started coughing. We had to evacuate the house and air it out. My hands felt like they'd been burned, for days afterward. I did not even chop the habanero, just split it in half.
