Bahrain Says It Seized Iranian, Syrian Explosives |
2013-12-31 |
[An Nahar] Bahraini authorities said Monday they have seized a boat smuggling explosives made in Iran and Syria into the Sunni-ruled kingdom, which quashed a Shiite-led uprising in 2011. The boat, which had two Bahrainis aboard, was stopped over the weekend at two nautical miles (3.7 kilometers) off the archipelago's coast, public security chief Major-General Tareq al-Hasan said. He said it had been tracked over a distance of 118 nautical miles (218 kilometers) northeast of the kingdom. |

#5 Maybe. There is (or was) a lucrative cross-traffic in smuggling goods across the Gulf. That they tracked it practically leaving Iran (there's roughly 140-150 nautical miles of water between Bahrain and Iran, and they tracked it at 118 nautical miles out) indicates the Bahrain authorities were either extra-alert or tipped off. |

#4 Or the shipper didn't pay off the right people, perhaps? |

#3 Strange - smuggling across the Gulf is generally overlooked. Someone must have tipped off the authorities, or the Bahrainis are unusually watchful. |

#1 Note the stuff was labeled. No effort to sterilize it. Bastards don't even care if they're found out. Which tells you something. |
