| 30 Taliban Insurgents Arrested in Nagarhar Operation |

The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country.. province on Monday, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) announced in a statement. The clearing operation was launched in the Chaparhar District of the province, and is expected to run another 10 days. The MoI reported that so far security forces have discovered and seized weapons, ammunition and explosives, including five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). IEDs have been one of the leading causes of death for Afghan forces, coalition forces and civilians during the past 13 years of war. The United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... estimates that over a majority of civilian casualties have been caused by IEDs. The majority of villages in Chaparhar District were cleared of gunnies and the "security situation has considerably improved following the operation," the MoI's statement said. The Taliban has not commented on the operation. |
