Detained Ukrainian demonstrators released |
2014-02-15 |
Ukrainian opposition says all demonstrators detained during nearly three months of antigovernment protests have been released under a recent amnesty law. The National Resistance, which unites Ukraine's three leading opposition parties, said that the last of the 234 jailed demonstrators had been released. Ukraine's parliament passed the amnesty law last month as part of an effort to end the crisis triggered by President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to cancel a landmark agreement with the EU in favor of closer ties with Russia. Prosecutor-General Viktor Pshonka said that in line with the amnesty law, criminal proceedings against all those who had been detained would be dropped if protesters cleared streets and government buildings that they occupy by February 17. |
