| Seizure of arms and ammunition near the southern border |

| [Ennahar] The Algerian army has discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition near the border with Mali, announced Wednesday the Algerian Ministry of Defence. These weapons were discovered Tuesday during a research operation conducted in the framework of the fight against smuggling in the region of Bordj Badji Mokhtar, extreme south of Algeria, the ministry said in a statement. It is "five automatic Kalashnikov rifles, three machine guns (FM), a heavy machine gun and 1,005 cartridges of different calibres," the source added. Since the beginning of the French intervention in Mali, in January 2013, Algiers has closed some 1,400 km border with Mali, in particular to avoid that Islamist groups find refuge on its territory. |
