One detained and another injured after Zintani brigade members stray into Algeria
2014-04-29
[Libya Herald] One member of the Zintan based Qaaqaa Brigade has been detained and another injured after the two men unknowingly crossed into Algeria and ran into a border patrol.

The Commander of Qaaqaa's 411 Border Guards, Mustafa Ikendiush, told the Libya Herald the two men encountered the Algerian Army while hunting for deer having crossed the border unintentionally.

He said that Qaaqaa and the Algerian border guards work closely to coordinate their patrols but the incident near Tadrart had occurred as a result of the two men's relative inexperience. "These members were new to the area and as such had no knowledge of it," Ikendiush said.

One of the two men escaped the firefight and has been taken to Ghat Hospital to receive treatment for gunshot wounds. Ikendiush described his condition as serious. The other brigade member is being held by the Algerian military.

"The Algerian Army is relentless and well-trained," Ikenduish said. "As the movement of murderous Moslem groups in the area has increased they have become more suspicious and more cautious," he added.

Tadrart, on the outskirts of the Tuareag-majority town of Ghat is extremely famous for its wildlife and ancient Tadrart Akakus rock paintings.
