[Dhaka Tribune] In a special drive early yesterday, police in Chittagong tossed in the calabooseKeep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! 24 Jamaat-e-Islam and Islami Chhatra Shibir ... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh... activists suspected of subversive activities in different parts of the district. The suspects, who were picked up from Satkania, Lohagara and Banshkhali upazilas, were allegedly involved in violence during the last general elections and were planning to create disturbances ahead of the forth coming verdict in the war crimes case against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi ...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami... , a police official said. Additional Superintendent of Police NazmulHasan of Chittagong (north zone) told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that acting on a tip-off,they arrested 20 members of the Islamic party and its student wing from Sadhonpur, Puichhari, Shekherkhil and other Jamaat-Shibir dominated areas of Banshkhali. Moreover, three desperados from Jamaat-Shibir were held from Lohagara, while one was nabbed from Satkania, he said. All the suspects were produced before a court yesterday. Most of those detained were accused in several cases filed with different cop shoppes in connection with the violence during the January elections, Nazmul said. The police official added that special drives would continue in the three upazilas to pre-empt any sabotage. |
