Tuareg fighters free 30 hostages in Mali
2014-05-21
[Iran Press TV] Tuareg fighters have released 30 hostages kidnapped in a deadly siege in the north of Mali.

The hostages were delivered to UN peacekeepers after being kidnapped in a raid on a local governor's office in the town of Kidal on Saturday, during which eight non-combatants were killed.

"We have just taken back around 30 hostages. They are in not bad condition. Two are very tired," an official from MINUSMA, the United Nations

peacekeeping force in Mali, said on Monday.

Mali's Prime Minister Moussa Mara said on Sunday that the country is "at war" in Kidal. Recent festivities between Tuareg members and the Malian army has left dozens of people dead.

"...We will mobilize the resources to fight this war," Mara said.

Chaos broke out in Mali after President Amadou Toumani Toure was toppled in a military coup on March 22, 2012. The coup leaders said they mounted the coup in response to the government's inability to contain the Tuareg rebellion in the north.

in the wake of the coup d'état, the Tuareg fighters took control of the entire northern desert region, but the Ansar Dine fighters then pushed them aside and took control of the region.
