| Niger arrests opposition members over coup |

I quit! dozens of opposition members for allegedly plotting a military coup in the West African country. Interior Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou said on Saturday that nearly 40 people, who are linked to parliament speaker Hama Amadou, were detained. The minister accused them of planning a "campaign of terror" in order to destroy the democracy. "They have been calling for violence for months. Our action is against people whose goal is to destroy democratic institutions." The African nation has seen a series of attacks in recent days between competing parties. The arrests come after a gun attack on the home of a ruling party politician and a petrol kaboom on the party's headquarters in which three people were maimed. Earlier this week, police arrested Amadou's son and two others in connection with the gun attack. Niger has also been the scene of student protests over the past week. According to reports, at least 10 people were maimed after police used tear gas to disperse students who were angry at delays in the payment of their scholarships. |
