Iraq
Mosul Falls to Insurgency
2014-06-10
This seems like a rather sudden and major increase in 'insurgency' capability - where did it come from?
Will Iran come to the 'rescue' (subjugation) of the Iraqi Shia? Or have they been spread too thin by Syria/Lebanon, Pakistan, & internal troubles?

Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq's teetering stability.

Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.

The speed with which one of Iraq's biggest cities has fallen under militant control is striking and suggests the U.S.-trained Iraqi security forces are even more vulnerable than had previously been thought.

The capture of the airport, which had served as a major hub for the U.S. military, could not be independently confirmed, but Nujaifi said it had been seized and that all of the aircraft there also were captured.
This is very bad: the Iraqi soldiers broke and ran. They left behind a large cache of American-supplied weapons which now are in the hands of the ISIS. And Mosul is a big city; hard to write this off.

#6  That being said, time to put money and support behind the Kurds, and eventually an independent Kurdistan (screw the racist Turks).

#5  Desertion by the Iraqi Army conscripts in the region. Its a shame they didn't have the opportunity of building a solid, professional military with a solid professional secular cadre. Wait... they did. Until Obama bailed out way too soon and too fast for "Peace in our time" progressive's political gains.

#4  The western bank is the Arab part of the city (the part where Saddam evicted the Kurds and gave the empty homes to Sunni Arabs). Unfortunately that includes the homes of many Christian Arabs.

The east bank is still in Kurdish hands. I suspect the battle between the Kurds and the Arabs is the real reason the west bank fell so easily.

#3  Have a feeling a great deal of the "Security Forces" suddenly donned masks, turning into "Militants". I don't see any way this happened on such a large scale without a mass desertion being planned for years. We've seen this type of thing recently with Boko-Haram.

#2  Always was a nasty place, that Mosul. Saddam's sons held out there until they met their end.... Allan be praised.

#1  Thank you Obama for stabbing the only democratic Arab nation in the back and allowing radical terrorists to take over.
