2014-06-16
[AnNahar] An gang has kidnapped Lebanese citizen Jerjes Rashed Rashed, 51, in the strife-torn Libyan city of Benghazi, asking for a million dollar ransom, Leb's National News Agency reported Sunday.

The agency said Rashed was kidnapped four days ago from his house in Benghazi. He was taken to an unknown destination.

"The captors on Saturday telephoned the director of the company for which Rashed works, asking for a million dollar ransom to release him," NNA said, noting that the man's boss is also Lebanese.

The agency said Rashed hails from the southern district of Jezzine.

Benghazi has been witnessing fierce festivities since rogue general Khalifa Haftar began an offensive against radical Islamist groups in the city, dubbed "Operation Dignity," on May 16.

Haftar has won widespread support for his campaign, including from air force units which have carried out air raids on jihadist positions in and around Benghazi.
