US Army LTC barred from entering his daughter's school while wearing his uniform |
2014-09-12 |
Rochester Schools Superintendent Robert Shaner apologized to the family of a U.S. Army officer who was turned away from a district high school for wearing his uniform. Lt. Col. Sherwood Baker went into Adams High School in Rochester Hills to talk to his daughter's counselor about her class schedule, but he was not allowed to enter the building because he was wearing his military uniform. "They stopped him at the door and told him he couldn't go in because it was against policy," wife Rachel Ferhadson said. Shaner, a veteran who served in the U.S. Marines from 1990-94, stressed that this is not the district's policy. He said the security company is contracted and that school officials have met with the security officers to make sure this doesn't happen again. "I've been on deployment. I understand what people go through and the sacrifices people make. I understand the expectation to be respected for what you've done," Shaner said. "I understand that what has taken place deeply hurts people. We will correct it." Other sources mentioned the wife saying "The security guard told him men and women in uniform were not allowed because it may offend another student." |

#14 Update - The very top guy is an ex-Marine who was deployed on US missions also, and said the issue will be resolved with the contracted security company. He said the military uniform will be honored at his district. |
