ISIS fighters now 'at the gates of Baghdad' despite Western airstrikes
2014-09-30
[DailyMail]
  • Fierce festivities between jihadists and government forces one mile from Iraqi capital
  • Militants understood to be attempting to enter and seize control of Baghdad
  • Reports of murderous Moslems' proximity to Baghdad came from Canon Andrew White, vicar of the city's St George's Church - Iraq's only Anglican church
  • News comes despite ongoing Western Arclight airstrikes against ISIS targets in Iraq

#14  See also RELATED DEFENCE.PK/FORUMS > [IBT.com] "ISLAMIC STATE" ONE MILE AWAY [1.2 miles = 2.0 kms] FROM IRAQI CAPITAL.

    * SAME > [Independent.UK] "ISLAMIC STATE" MORE THAN ONE HOUR AWAY FROM BAGHDAD - WITH NO SIGN OF IRAQ ARMY BEING ABLE TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL COUNTER-ATTACK.

    * FYI BHARAT RAKSHAK > SAUDI AIR FORCE PILOT ARRESTED FOR REFUSING TO BOMB ISIS POSITIONS IN SYRIA.

Lastly, as per CNN AM Segment, IIRC the USDOD = USA may send an additional 1400 US Troops to Iraq???

#13  One thing that concerns me, SteveS, is that every story I've seen on this goes back to Canon White.

Interesting point, tw. Maybe a result of correspondents all hanging out at the same hotel bar. All part of the fun of playing open source intel analyst.

We can laugh at the Daily Mail as a source, but they do seem to give coverage to stories that are...underreported in our national media.

I see at least one tv network is doing the story.

#12  What exactly is going to happen to our 7000 citizens/soldiers in the Green Zone.
Orders are being sent that they must take off their boots before defending themselves.

#11  rjs, I was thinking of the reaction to FDRs internment policy circa '60s. I was there and that became the touchstone in a lot of ways for the "noble savage/poor oppressed minority" type wailing from the anti-war crowd.

There were lots of arrows in the quiver of the PC dictator wannabes including anything having to do with Vietnam, Jim Crow, the Trail of Tears, Japanese internment, etc. I just picked on the one that seemed to me to be appropos but there're are plenty to go around.

    One possible scenario.

#7  Nice article. Sad we have to turn to the Brit media for good coverage.

One thing that concerns me, SteveS, is that every story I've seen on this goes back to Canon White. Hopefully there will be a confirming source soon.

#6  AlanC, never heard the internment as a motivator for PC. I'd understood the PC system as a post-Vietnam operation as American red's took to controlling the university.

#5  The US and other countries are wary of robust airstrikes because it will result in civilian casualties. This wariness is in turn due to years and years of obsessing on this and to the idiotic comments of the WH and State dept during the 50 day Protective shield op.

#4  This could be the beginning of the end of the system of Sovereign States and a reversion to the era of empires circa Ghengis Kahn.

How much of this can be blamed on FDR's internment of the Japanese for WWII? The distaste for that policy seems to have tipped us over the top of the mountain and we've been rolling down the hill of PC fear ever since to the point where we can't call Islam a fascist system bent on world conquest.

How much time do we have left?

#2  Move into Baghdad, nullifies air power, and a mass exodus of shiites cause chaos further south.

As for "Obama added that breaking up the terrorist cell will be a complicated battle involving both military and political action.", I'd say we're somewhat beyond the "terrorist cell" phase when we are talking about large swaths of two countries.
