Concerns Over High Bride Price in Khost
2014-10-08
[Tolo News] A number of women from eastern Khost province
... across the border from Miranshah, within commuting distance of Haqqani hangouts such as Datta Khel and probably within sight of Mordor. Khost is populated by six different tribes of Pashtuns, the largest probably being the Khostwal, from which it takes its name...
have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
s over the high bride price in the province on Monday, adding that "it is one of the main causes of violence against women in the province."

"Because of the high bride price, many girls have remained unmarried. Some have resorted to escaping from their father's homes," Khost resident Suma said.

Another resident Gul Bakht added that, "the bride price has increased to one million Afs (almost $18,000), an amount that requires years of work."

A number of men as well as civil society organizations have also expressed apprehensions over the damaging tradition.

"Asking for a bride price is common in many provinces, but it is worse in Khost," civil society activist Nasirin Ehsani said. "It is very hard for men to collect this money in order to be able to get married. Some even go out of the country for labor."

According to the Department of Women's Affairs in Khost, tribal elders and religious scholars have a key role in resolving the issue. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
reports indicate that despite the tribal elders' request that bride price become 250,000 Afs (almost $2000), people continue to go with the trend of high bride prices.

"Our department has made efforts to decrease the bride price for the past two years but it has continued to grow, reaching a million" head of the department Khawar Amiri added.

Many women face domestic violence in their married lives because of the in laws' suppressed anger over paying high amounts of money to the bride's family.

#1  $18,000 for a bride in Khost? What ever happened to the notion of marrying for love (sarc)?
